Principal's Message 中文

May 2010 (Updated 6/13/2010)

Dear parents, teachers, and students:

Every time I sit in front of the computer to write to you, I cannot help but realize that time fleets.  In a blink of an eye, the Spring semester has concluded.  May was truly a very busy month, and it was also one with the most thanks.  On May 8th we had a Mother's Day event to appreciate all our parents.  We also gave the kids a chance to see the greatness of a mother's love, and to understand and appreciate their moms.  The program on that day was very eventful, including slides that explain the origin of Mother's Day, a question and answer competition of "How Much Do You Know About Your Mother?" and a video about appreciation.  These programs are to remind sons and daughters to have more patience and care more for their parents, especially when they grow old.  The day's activities came to a heart-warming end when students gave to their moms carnations hand-made by Mrs. Song.

The Spring semester commenced on May 15th, and we also chose this date to celebrate the school's 30 year anniversary.  Joy filled the atmosphere when many former principals and board of directors came back to join us in this family reunion.  Long-term supporters of our school, including Mr. Jin from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami, Mr. Yang from the Overseas Compatriot Affairs Commission, Principal Zheng from the Kissimmee Chinese School, and many others in the greater Orlando area, made time out of their busy schedule to be with us that day and to give us blessing and guidance.  It was a happy, touching, and thankful moment.

As the school principal this year, I felt very honored, and also felt a sense of indescribable fear.  However, thanks to the teamwork and cooperation of everyone in this big family, I feel more and more at ease each day.  This family includes the Chinese American Association of Central Florida (CAACF), School Board of Members, Parent Teacher Association (PTA), CAACF Dance Club, and many volunteers.  It was with the help of these people, and the group effort of the school directors, teachers, and students, that we were able to showcase the fruits of our learning in a successful anniversary celebration.

It has been thirty years since the Chinese School of CAACF started, and term after term we have had seventeen principals, all of whom worked very hard to promote the beautiful Chinese culture and the Chinese language.  Even though starting something from the beginning is always difficult, they all worked tirelessly without fail, and for that I am grateful.  I would also like to offer my sincerest appreciation to all those who have supported and assisted our school one way or another, especially the PTA for volunteering to keep the school safe and clean, and to coordinate various panel discussions, food fairs, teacher's luncheons, etc.

One of the greatest responsibilities and challenges of being the school principal is finding a consistent class location.  Over the last thirty years we had several relocations, but for the last nine years we have been right here at the Winter Park High School Ninth Grade Center.  I am thankful for Principal David Stanly's support over these years, as well as custodian Mr. Lloyd Batson for opening school doors for us every weekend and dealing with unexpected issues such as dining hall fire alarms, classroom AC problems, and power outages.  With his help our classes are able to progress as smoothly as possible.

Over the past year I have received much assistance from the PTA, which allowed me to put together several cultural programs without any problems or concerns.  Within school grounds we had a teacher appreciation tea party, rice ball and lantern making and riddle solving during Lantern Festival, and a Mother's Day celebration.  Outside of the school we had a Chinese New Year celebration and cultural exchange at the Edgewater Library.  I would like to thank the PTA, teachers, students, and volunteers for their time and effort.  Without your help, these events and many of my dreams would not have been possible.

I would like to take this chance to introduce a special someone.  She has had a strong connection with our Chinese school for a long time.  She embraces the volunteering mentality and has provided immeasurable service to the school for 25 years.  Her name is Angie Chaw.  She started as a teacher here in 1983; became the principal in 1988; in those years also served as the Director of Academics, Chairwoman of the Board; and eventually came full circle to take the role of a teacher again.  Now she has retired from her duties, but not her responsibilities.  She still holds her love for our school close to her heart, and continually comes back to support us.  She is a great role model, who loves to give and enjoys what she does, and strives for her best in any position.  I would like to encourage our teachers to take initiative in being active in administrative work, and even consider becoming the principal as well.  Afterwards, please resume the role of a regular teacher and take joy in nurturing our youngsters.

Lastly, I want to thank all members of our school, Parents, teachers, and students for coming every Saturday and continuing to foster our school.  Let us join our hands and put our minds together to build an even more loving school.  Registration for the Fall semester will start at 1PM on Saturday, August 28th, and classes will start at 2PM on the same day.  Please spread the word.

Sincerest wishes,

Shiow-Chih Hwang
